Uptick in vacation rentals has agencies optimistic (News 14 Carolina)

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. – Some rental agencies along the coast say more people are renting summer vacation homes and condos compared to this time last year.

They say while it's still early, they're optimistic about the summer season.

"Seeing an increase in our reservations for this year and we have no reason to believe it wouldn't be a great summer season," Kevin Futral, general manager of Bluewater Vacation Rentals in Emerald Isle, said. "Just from the numbers we are seeing so far, we think that it will continue throughout the season and that we will have a very good year."

Bluewater has about 1,100 rental units, and Futral said they're already seeing an increase of about 5 percent compared to this time last year.

He says while the rental numbers change from day to day, that's still a good sign. It's a similar story in Atlantic Beach.

"Now we're still in the early stages of the season, and our oceanfront houses are booked heavily already," rental manager Mackie Tout said.

Coldwell Banker Spectrum Properties has about 100 weeklong vacation rentals. Compared to this time last year, more people have already booked their summer getaways for Memorial Day weekend.

"Based upon our rental numbers at this point versus the same point last year, we are up substantially," Tout said.

The New Hanover County Tourism Development Authorities also holds an optimistic outlook for beach towns for this spring and summer.

"People may not take a long vacation or go on a cruise or something like that, but will come down from the Piedmont area down here on a two-hour drive and spend a weekend or a week at our beach communities," Bill Caster, New Hanover County commissioner, said.
