| Del Mar to discuss regulating short-term rentals Proposition J, which would have extended the transient occupancy tax of 11.5 percent to short-term vacation rentals, failed at the polls on June 8. But the city of Del Mar is considering another option for regulating such dwelling and even potentially generating some revenue through a permit process. Property owners may soon be required to apply for a permit to operate their properties as short-term rentals. On Monday night, the City Council will consider adopting two ordinances: the first would amend Title 9 of the municipal code to accommodate and regulate the operation of short-term rentals. The other would then allow for the use of existing residences as short-term rentals. The city would create a set of guidelines regulating short-term rentals and would redefine the terms dwelling, dwelling unit and hotel in the municipal code and add a definition for short-term rental. The City Council meets Monday at 6 p.m. in the Del Mar TV studio, 240 10th St. For an agenda, visit www.delmar.ca.us.
