AAA Predicts More Labor Day Travel

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga.  —  

Tourism officials say, Tybee Island is having one of its best summers on record. It might be folks trying to beat the record heat. But the oil spill and the economy are other possible factors. (photo Orlando Montoya)

AAA says, the number of Georgia travelers hitting the road this holiday weekend will jump 7% from last year.

Nearly 6 million people are expected to travel in the South Atlantic region next weekend.

Vacation-friendly Tybee Island already is at 90% occupancy for the Labor Day weekend.

Amy Gaster of the island's Tourism Council says, Tybee is having a record summer for vacation and room rentals.

"And we are seeing visitors with license tags from places that aren't as typical," Gaster says. "I think people are coming from a little bit further away than normal, such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama."

Tybee hotel stays are up 17% from last summer.

Gaster says, she thinks, a rebounding economy and the BP oil spill both played a big part.

AAA says, overall travel in the US should be up by 10% Labor Day weekend, with travelers spending more but staying closer to home.
