Last-minute Sound Shore deal for vacation shopping

If you've carefully planned ahead your family's August summer vacation, you're probably ready to pack and go when the time comes. But if you're one of those people who, because of time constraints or habit, leaves things to the last minute, we're here to help.

And there's good news. While you're getting ready to hit the beach or lake, now is the time when most retailers are getting rid of their summer merchandise and preparing to usher in fall. So there are deals to be had on beachwear, totes, flip-flops and other summer get-away necessities.

East Coast Surf, Skate & Snow

Why go: If you're taking a trip anywhere near the ocean, stop here first. With temperatures jumping up to the 90s this summer and high UV indexes, a popular item at the shop this season is the sun shirt — thermal, tight-fitting sportswear that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of more than 50. A typical sun shirt here costs about $30.

The store also features a wide variety of clothing for surfers, in-line skaters and skateboarders, or the casual person who just wants to look like one. Board shorts, long trendy shorts for men, cost about $24.

"We're a destination shopping place for a lot of people," owner Bill Homer said. "We cater not just to surfers, but the local community, too, because people come in buying clothes year-round."

Inside info: If you want to go surfing during your vacation but have no idea how, the store also offers lessons and surfboard rentals.

Sportech

Why go: As retailers' thoughts turn to football, ice hockey and snow skiing this time of year, Sportech still has plenty of summer gear ranging from swimsuits, shorts and beach accessories fresh in stock. Whether you need gear to play tennis or clothes to lounge by the pool, Sportech has you covered, owner Mel Siegel said.

"We're a type of store that gets a lot of summer business for families that go on vacation," Siegel said. "We usually have an ongoing clearance sale of apparel and footwear going on. We tend to keep plenty of product in stock for people going on warm-weather vacations."

Inside info: The clearance rack in the back has a large selection of fashionable sandals, shoes, shorts and shirts for less than $20.

Details: Sportech, 124 S. Ridge St., Rye Brook. 914-934-0001.

Robert'sDepartment Store

Why go: For the men in your house, this is the place to go for fashionable summer wear on the cheap. Fedora hats, half-sleeve, button-down dress shirts and shorts are regularly on sale for less than $20.

"We're generally very big on sidewalk sales where you can get good deals," manager Jared Andreassi said. "In August, we usually have big sales on sandals and we always have things on sale in terms of T-shirts."

Inside info: Though it's a primarily men's store, Robert's has a wide variety of vacation-friendly footwear for men and women such as Crocs, the popular rubber-like comfort shoes, that are less than $30.

Details: Robert's Department Store, 342 Mamaroneck Ave., Mamaroneck. 914-698-0969.

Pelham Bicycle Center

Why go: Want to really explore your vacation destination and save gas, too? Adult- and child-size mountain bikes at the Pelham Bicycle Center cost about $250 to $300. And if you buy a bike here, manager Pedro Sanchez said the store is offering a 15 percent discount on all accessories, so you'll be able to walk out with a bike, helmet and gloves without putting too much strain on your wallet.

Inside info: When you're back from vacation, join the store's riding club, which takes weekly bike trips around Pelham, New Rochelle and Mamaroneck. The club meets at the store Saturday mornings throughout the summer at 7:30 a.m.

Details: Pelham Bicycle Center, 109 Wolfs Lane, Pelham. 914-738-3338.

What a Girl Wants

Why go: This place specializes in trendy yet affordable clothing for girls ages 7 to 15. Owner Sharon MacInnes said some of the popular items many girls are buying here for vacation are tote and messenger bags that cost about $30, as well as the uber-popular Silly Bandz bracelets for $2.50.

Inside info: The store is running a 30 to 50 percent off sale on all summer items until Aug. 15. There's also a $10-and-under table where you can pick up a pair of flip-flops for $2.99.

Details: What a Girl Wants, 242 Harrison Ave., Harrison. 914-630-2710.
