| Browse vacation rentals with Apple iPhone app (Door County Advocate) Posted: 20 Mar 2010 02:19 AM PDT The first Door County-related iPhone application is available through the Apple iTunes store. Dustin Overbeck of Town Web Design Inc. developed what is commonly called an "app" for his clients at JR Vacation Rentals in Sturgeon Bay. The app allows potential Door County visitors to see a list of all available JR Vacation Rentals properties, including pictures and prices, and to share them with families and friends. JR Vacation Rentals business owners Pam Jorns and Paula Reichel learned about the technology from family members who were more familiar with it. "Our kids have iPod Touches," said Reichel. "When (12-year-old daughter) Caitie showed me how easy it was to download it and scroll through it, we saw how easy this could be. Before that, I had heard of an app, but I wasn't 100 percent sure of what it meant." Apple devices, such as the iPod Touch, can be used to access a number of applications — like ones that allow people to check the weather, for instance. Many apps available at the iTunes store can be downloaded for free to whatever Apple device a customer has — and if that person searches for Door County, JR Vacation Rentals is the first name that will be retrieved. "They deserve a lot of credit," said Overbeck about JR Vacation Rentals. "It was risky to be the first one. To develop an app, you're investing thousands of dollars, and we may or may not be approved by Apple. They have very strict guidelines for content, because they are most concerned with their end users." The app initially was rejected, but after some tweaking, it was approved. "I immediately called them (at JR Vacation Rentals) and said, 'We did it!'" Overbeck said. "We got lucky. We did enough research to know to cover our bases." JR Vacation Rentals is registered as a travel-related app, primarily used by customers who live in metropolitan areas such as Milwaukee, Chicago or Minneapolis. "We're targeting a market of prospective renters and for those who have a second home here," said Jorns. "If they are driving back home, they may not have a laptop with them, but they will have an iPhone or iPod and can be looking at what they want to do on their next vacation. "It's just a smaller version of what's on our Web site. The iPhone mimics our site." Overbeck, who also designed the JR Vacation Rentals Web site, has worked with the women for about 12 years and designs sites that allow customers to update their own databases and Web sites in real time, which in turn immediately updates the app. That puts up-to-the-minute information at customers' fingertips of what properties are available or pricing changes. Several municipalities, including the towns of Sevastopol and Jacksonport, have enlisted Overbeck's help in designing their Web sites. The app already has been downloaded hundreds of times since it was launched less than a month ago, Overbeck said, and Jorns said that was obvious by the number of e-mails and phone calls that have been coming in. "We've received thank-you notes from some people," she said. "We're getting great feedback. It's just a wonderful new tool." "Our owners are also very excited about this — not just the people renting," said Reichel. "This technology really connects Door County with those markets to stay competitive. It's one more way for us to reach people and let them browse our homes." JR Vacation Rentals has more than 50 properties listed as vacation rentals.
